How Technology Changed the World of Employment

Much like the rest of the world, the recruitment industry has seen significant changes over the last 50 years. This change, mostly thanks to the rise of new technology, is leading to marketplace efficiency gains and increased mobility in labour forces internationally and here in New Zealand. It’s resulted in a decrease in the cost of hiring candidates, greater mobility in the market, and the continuous development of contracting solutions.

Why HR is a Force for Good

Why do we have HR departments anyway?

Over the years much has been written on “Why we Hate HR“, “Why HR should be split up” among business units, and why HR professionals have to change. Each of these articles criticizes our beloved HR team for their inability to drive business value, their bureaucratic practices, and their lack of skills in business and analytics.

Recruiting and Hiring in the Insurance and Asset Management Industry

Despite the broad array of opportunities available in the insurance and asset management sectors, hiring remains something of a challenge. Perhaps because it lacks the glamour of some other industries, insurance and asset management companies have historically struggled to achieve the same levels of interest as other industries, such as law – particularly from younger generations.

But now we are shooting ourselves in the foot yet again.

Using a recruitment agency can be better than hiring in-house. Yes, really.

When looking to hire, using a recruitment agency may have crossed your mind, but if you’re like most people, your first thought was to place a job ad. Or better yet, a free job ad. And that, my friend, is likely your first wrong turn.

Higher Salary Demands: The Cost of Poor Online Reviews

A recent article published at the Harvard Business Review, “Why Do Employees Stay?” examines key reasons why employers suffer high turnover, pointing out that replacing an employee costs about 21 percent of their annual pay.

That’s not so surprising. We all know (or should know) that there’s a high cost to organizations with reputations as poor employers, especially as reflected in online reviews.

Is this the best candidate ever?

Reading the constant recruiter bashing posts on LinkedIn puts a smile on my face. Some of the comments criticising recruiters are justified. Some aren’t. Some of the recruiter responses are laughable at times. Some are genuine.

There was a story last week about a recruiter who emailed a resume to a client, where they had no previous relationship. The client decided to keep the candidate’s resume and contact them directly, freezing the recruiter out.
